2013: Year in review, part 1 - December 2012 and January

It’s 3:22 am, but I’m not sleepy yet. I’ll sleep in tomorrow. Right now I’m listening to Ana Tijoux’s album “1997” while I write about the happenings in 2013.

Now, let’s see, where do I start? I’m trying to think back to January to remember if anything note-worthy happened, but I’m drawing a blank. I have seriously NO remembrance of the first month of this year. Apart from that I was probably busy doing some project or other.

Checking my Gmail for all conversations between December 2012 and January 2013, I can confirm that I was indeed doing some projects. I was also probably in the middle of Season 2 of Game of Thrones (that’s an awesome series). Apart from that, I was also busy filling out forms and going through all the processes to apply for an exchange programme to the US (an idea which I eventually dropped because it’s just too complicated).

Meanwhile, while going through my Gmail archives, I found the following photo from a conversation I had with Abang Fadhil on the 19th December 2012. It was taken in class with our Techniques de Communication lecturer who brought a pear tart. She’s the one to my left in the photo. That week, three of us had our birthdays: myself just two days earlier, Alban (the guy on my right) on the 23rd and the teacher too, on the 21st if I’m not mistaken.

And here’s a photo from my birthday last year. My classmates and I went over to Bénédicte’s place during lunch break and had pasta and cake (which we brought to English class right after).

Anyway, that’s not even news from 2013, that’s from 2012. Gosh, I really should update this thing more.

Oh, and I went to the MIDEM Concert in Cannes! (I didn’t forget that, I just thought it was in February, not January). From Wikipedia: Midem is the acronym for Marché International du Disque et de l'Edition Musicale, which is organised annually in and around the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès in Cannes, France.

I didn’t go there for all the concerts or the whole duration, I just went there on the 27th of January with Marshella, Afif and a bunch of other Malaysians for the “Malaysian Supernova Evening”. Basically it was a concert featuring a few artists from Malaysia, namely Jaclyn Victor, Hujan, Bunkface, Goldfish & Blink, Sasi The Don, Amanda Imani, Nadhira and some lady named ZE whom I’d never heard of before.

I remember 2 things distinctly that night: towards the end of the concert, a lady came up to me and said “I’m just about to leave, but I noticed you from far, and I just thought you’re beautiful”. Other than that, I also remember that Cyril Janting was invited on stage by Hujan to perform a French version of “Aku Skandal” which he had written. Awesome!

I managed to get a photo with Jaclyn Victor:

This concert was the first time I’d heard Hujan live, or met them, and they’re all really cool people. They came over to Nice the three days after the concert and we showed them around a little. They were totally fun to hang out with. Here’s a photo I got with them while Muddin and I were showing them around Monaco:

Okay, looks like this post is starting to get a bit long, so I’ll just make this Part 1 and continue my reminiscence of the year in the next post.
