Rice!

Hello there,

It’s been quite a while since I’ve eaten rice, which is why this weekend I made ayam masak kicap and fried rice:

Saturday’s dinner

Fried rice with prawns and mussels for Sunday’s lunch

Now that I’ve got some rice in me, I’m all set for the week ahead!

Making friends

When we make new friends, how often does it happen because we said "Shall we be friends?" I imagine the process of friend-making should go something like this:

Person A: I like you. Do you want to be my friend?
Person B: Okay, let's be friends.
Person A: Hello, friend :)

But this is the oversimplified version. Really, even though we don't say it, what we mean is this:

I think I like you. Let's be friends for a while, and then if we like it we'll be friends for a bit longer until we get bored or until we stop liking each other. How's that sound?

Scary thought of the day

Today, I had a thought.
Actually, I had more than one, but I had one particularly frightening one:
I imagined that maybe one day the government would discover that I’m really really smart, and then they’d take me away from my family and send me to a faraway country where I have to speak an unusual, foreign language and learn really smart and complicated things which resemble magic when observed from a distance, but upon closer inspection look more like gibberish. And they’d make me sit through hours and hours of talking by people who seem to know a great deal about things that aren't particularly interesting to me, but are somehow supposed to be really important, and then they’d test me every week just to see if I could keep up, and if I understand all of the talking.
Oh no! It’s already happening! Aaah!

Why I haven't finished my work yet.

Here I am in my room, trying to get work done since I got up at noon. It’s now midnight, so it’s been 12 hours, and one might expect that I would have gotten some solid work done. That would be true, if only I wasn’t so distracted and uninterested in the work I’m supposed to get done.

It’s a presentation that I must do for English, and after much deliberating and half watched videos on TED, I finally decided that I’ll talk about Google’s self-driving car. Once I’d decided on the topic, I then went on to make the PowerPoint presentation. Probably about an hour later, I’d finished writing the title: “Google’s self-driving car”.

I just finished watching Winnie the Pooh, which came out earlier this year. It’s was splendid - I enjoyed it very much, and it gave me quite the rumbly in my tumbly.
As the movie was starting off, everything looked very life-like. The wooden door, the furniture, the floor. So detailed, so realistic. Then I realised: it was all real! I groaned thinking, 'is this a live action movie?' Immediately a thousand and one renditions of a live action Pooh Bear started popping up in my upstairs circus.

Hello readers,

One week of holidays has passed, and there’s another week left to go before class starts again. Naturally, I have spent the last week doing so many things that I didn’t even notice the time just fly by.

Semester three is a hard one

Hello my loveable friends,

I'm now in semester three of my 4 semester long course at the IUT of Nice. This is both good news and not so good news. It's good because it means I'm more than half way done with GEII which I never really liked (and I think, quite frankly,  sometimes hate with a fiery passion).

On the other hand, it's not so good because it turns out that when the lecturers and seniors warned us from the beginning that sem 3 would be hard, they weren't kidding.

As you can probably gather from this photo, I have just returned from a trip to Australia!

On the 3rd of July, 2011, I left Kota Kinabalu to Perth, Western Australia. I went to Australia because I had a job to do – conduct seminars on improving the memory – and so I did.

MASAF Games, Toulon, and the Arrival of the Juniors

Hello friends,

It’s now one week into the Easter holidays, with another week left to go before class recommences, pitilessly slapping our lazy, just-gained-four-pounds, holiday-fatigued faces with three exams in the first week.

The imminent exams and the revision that it implies aside, there’s plenty of other work to do. I could list it out in one long sentence separated by commas, but it looks more impressive and daunting when organized in bullet points:

Electrical and Electronic Engineering: What it is. Sort of.

Hello there,

Very rarely do I post anything about my studies here, because well, I just don’t find it that interesting. But I suppose that curious as you are, you must sometimes wonder, “exactly what does one learn in an electrical and electronic engineering course?”

Unfortunately, I am unable to answer that question because quite frankly, I’m not sure either.

It is afternoon on a Monday, and normally I’d be in class, fighting the urge to fall asleep and trying half-heartedly to understand the electronics lesson that is being unceremoniously flung at us poor students, in a foreign, strange language. But today, class doesn’t begin until 1.45 pm! It is a glorious day!

It’s been quite a while since I’ve written anything on this blog, and this being the first post of 2011, I suppose a little retrospection of the past year is appropriate. And what better way to recap 2010 than with a collage of images:
